Punjab Launches Major Water Conservation Initiative
The Punjab government has unveiled an ambitious plan to construct 1,000 groundwater recharge wells across Lahore in an effort to restore and maintain the city’s rapidly declining underground water levels. This initiative marks one of the largest water conservation projects undertaken in the provincial capital.
Pilot Well Shows Positive Results
According to sources in the Housing Department, a pilot groundwater recharge well has already been installed, with the capacity to recharge 8,000 gallons of water per day. Currently, only three recharge wells exist in Lahore, highlighting the urgent need for expanded infrastructure.
In the first phase of the project, 15 new recharge wells will be built, incorporating modern engineering techniques as directed by the Chief Minister of Punjab.
Recharge Wells to Be Set Up in Parks Across the City
The Punjab Housing Authority (PHA) will allocate designated spaces for the new wells within public parks across Lahore. This approach ensures that green areas play a key role in restoring groundwater levels while maintaining the city’s natural landscape.
Secretary Housing Noorul Amin Mengal emphasized that preserving existing trees during construction will be a top priority. Additionally, strict measures will be enforced to prevent environmental pollution during the development process.
Province-Wide Expansion Under WASA Punjab
The initiative will not be limited to Lahore alone. WASA Punjab will supervise the establishment of groundwater recharge points across other cities in the province as well. These wells will help reduce water depletion and support long-term sustainability in urban areas.
Secretary Mengal highlighted the importance of the project, stating:
“Water is a blessing and should be saved from being wasted. All institutions will take this project seriously and ensure its successful completion.”
